Top 3 Things to Pray for Your Children

Updated: Sep 25, 2018

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

This is my mandate as a mom as is my daily prayer that they learn the ways of God. But

guess what? I've got to live it also. Children learn by example. So I speak often of praying with my children, even in the little things. There is power in prayer and here are the 3 things that I always pray for:

1. Wisdom. James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him". I pray this daily because as they grow they need wisdom to make good choices. They need wisdom to understand what it being taught and wisdom to apply it to life.

2. Protection. Psalms 91:2-4 says:

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.

He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge

His truth shall be your shield and buckler

I talk about what it means to trust in God with my children. Mainly because He knows what's best for us and He is all powerful, but He can protect us from the monsters that we face (even the monsters in the closet!) When they go to sleep however, I pray over them that He keeps them and covers them. I pray that that He shields their minds, hearts and bodies from whatever trouble comes. They are so precious, I have to leave them in His hands every day.

3. Joy. I pray that my children are happy, yes, but I also pray for the joy that comes from God above. Joy in the Lord is my strength! So I pray this is also true for them to experience and walk with in their lives. That they will "count it all joy" (from James 1:2) no matter what trials they face.
